According to the Hollywood Reporter, the great Donald Glover will be joining the cast of Marvel Studios/Sony Picture’s SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.
No word yet on who he is playing, but if you click on… We have some thoughts.
Glover made waves several years ago when his name was being bandied about to take over the Spider-Man mantle from Tobey Maguire for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. That didn’t happen, unfortunately, but this is a pretty swell consolation prize.
Who could he be playing? There are many possibilities. He could be playing Robbie Robertson, a high ranking editor at the Daily Bugle who works under J. Jonah Jameson. He could also be playing Robbie’s son, Randy, who showed up in the comics for a little bit. Others have posited that Glover would be a great fit as a cool, younger teacher that tries to get through to Peter while he is juggling his double life.
Apparently The Tinkerer, AKA Phineas Mason, is going to be a character in the upcoming MCU reboot. He allegedly gets his hands on Chitauri technology in the wake of The Battle of NYC (the major battle in 2012’s THE AVENGERS) and builds a flight suit with it for The Vulture, who we all kind of assume Michael Keaton is playing.
No matter who he is playing, it will be great to see Glover show up in the MCU, which has already seen the likes of his COMMUNITY classmates with Danny Pudi showing up in CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER and Jim Rash appearing in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will web into theaters on July 7th, 2017.
