The first teaser trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND was nice, but didn’t do much in the way of building any genuine anticipation for the third Trek outing in the rebooted universe. In fact in played into the narrative that, under the direction of Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3-7), this movie would be more high octane action than thoughtful science fiction.

The full theatrical trailer shows that not to be the case. In fact, it seems as though we are finally getting a new Star Trek movie that deals with exploration and the dangers of trekking into the final frontier…

Here is the trailer:

And here are some enterprising thoughts:

-Captain Kirk, deep into his five-year-mission, is ruminating on his place in Starfleet and whether he belongs here or is still trying to live up to his late father’s legacy.

-The warp effects look more like INTERSTELLAR than STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and I’m very much into that. It’s colorful, weird, and exciting. More of this please.

-The President of Starfleet tells someone (likely Kirk) that it isn’t uncommon for someone to feel lost when exploring the outer reaches of space. This feels like an interesting rejiggering of the franchise. Kirk is Kirk, Spock is Spock, and Bones is Bones… But they aren’t at a place where feel like this is what they are meant to do with the rest of their lives. I have to imagine that the story of this film puts them in a place where they plan on exploring till they are old and grey.

-We see a vicious swarm of alien ships attack, dismantle, and destroy the Enterprise. Kirk tells everyone to abandon ship. Man, the Enterprise really takes a beating in these films, doesn’t she?

-Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba look like solid additions to the franchise. We see more Boutella than Elba and she definitely leaves a fun impression. Elba looks menacing in the brief moment we see of him.

-Kirk is riding a teleporting motorcycle. Yes.

-I’m loving that it looks like we’re going to be getting a bunch of Bones/Spock time in this movie. They really did a hell of a job casting the main trio, didn’t they? I hope we see a bunch more of these movies and it sounds like they plan on making that a reality.

-Uhura kicks ass in this movie. This is a very good thing.

-“I think you’re underestimating humanity.” That sounds like Jim Kirk to me!

-Trailer ends with the crew flying an NX class starship off of the planet that they have been stranded on. That’s awesome! I’m glad that this trailer, while a MASSIVE improvement over the last one, still hasn’t really shown it’s hand. Still plenty of movie left to discover.

I can’t wait to discover more on July 22nd!
