The Wrap has revealed that Taika Waititi is in negotiations to direct THOR: RAGNAROK for Marvel Studios.

This feels very much in line with the inspired hiring of James Gunn, Anthony & Joe Russo, and Peyton Reed. His last film, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, is one of the best movies that I’ve seen this year. While I was expecting the third Thor film to be much darker, his background in comedy definitely means that there are ‘yuks’ to be had at the end of the world.

The Thor films have been a mixed bag up to this point. THOR had a nice arc for the main characters, but felt cheap and claustrophobic to the point where it had more in common with an AGENTS OF SHIELD episode than a Marvel movie. THOR: THE DARK WORLD improved upon that movie… but not by much. It doesn’t have much in the way of a villain or a story and therefore pretty much coasted on just being a fun MCU flick.

Hopefully lightning will finally strike for the thunder-god.

Here is the trailer for WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS:

This feels like very good news for the one franchise that Marvel hasn’t been able to make sing.
