October should start of strongly as one of the most anticipated film of the year will be opening followed by strong holdovers from last weekend.

THE MARTIAN starring Matt Damon and based off the best selling novel by Andy Weir looks to have the same success as GRAVITY which opened this same weekend two years ago. Both films have somewhat similar plots and they are about a single astronaut stranded in space, so I see THE MARTIAN performing just as well as GRAVITY did. GRAVITY opened with an October record of $55.7mil, and I think THE MARTIAN has a good chance of getting close to that number at $50mil by Sunday.

SICARIO is opening wide after a strong limited release run and with the reviews being some of the best of the year, it should help bring in audiences. Over the weekend, I predict the film will make $13.5mil. That doesn’t seem like a huge number, but I assume this film will be garnering awards buzz and that it will help it stay on the charts for awhile.

Since HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 has zero direct competition, it should only suffer from a slight fall in its second weekend and make $30mil. THE INTERN should also hold on well and make a decent $11mil, but I expect EVEREST to suffer a steep fall and make $7.5mil after it’s so-so wide expansion numbers last weekend.

THE MARTIAN – $50mill

SICARIO – $13.5mil

THE INTERN – $11mil

EVEREST – $7.5mil

This week in Box Office History: On this exact weekend 5 years ago, the multi Oscar nominated film THE SOCIAL NETWORK opened at the #1 spot with $22mil and it went on to grossing $96mil by the end of its run in the theaters.
