September ended on a high note thanks to a record breaking opening and strong holdovers.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 was the huge winner this weekend as it broke the record for largest September opening with $47.4mil. The previous record was set by the original HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA when it opened with $42.5mil back in 2012. This is great news for Sony as they’ve been having a horrible year at the box office, and they were desperate for a win. Since this is the only family film for the next couple of weeks, and that we’re getting close to Halloween, the film should have staying power in box office.

THE INTERN performed in lines with previous Nancy Myers films making a solid $17.7mil. This might not seem like a large number, but her films tend to have long legs and become solid mid-level hits.

I guess I thought EVEREST was going be a bigger hit┬áthan it ended up being, but in its wide release, it was only able to muster up $13.2mil. This is an okay number, but I know Universal was expecting more after it was gangbusters when it was showing in just IMAX theaters. It’s 2 week total is now $23.1mil and it was made for $55mil, so it does have a mountain to climb to break even.

THE GREEN INFERNO wasn’t able to make a name for itself in this busy weekend, as it got swallowed up and only made $3.5mil.┬áMaybe the studio should have considered releasing the film the On Demand/Streaming/In Theaters route, as it might have reached a wider audience that way.

Our holdovers from last week held on well as MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRAILS made $14.2mil for a two week total of $51mil and BLACK MASS made $11mil for a total of $42mil.

THE INTERN – $17.7mil

EVEREST – $13.2mil

BLACK MASS – $11mil
