September ended on a high note thanks to a record breaking opening and strong holdovers.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 was the huge winner this weekend as it broke the record for largest September opening with $47.4mil. The previous record was set by the original HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA when it opened with $42.5mil back in 2012. This is great news for Sony as they’ve been having a horrible year at the box office, and they were desperate for a win. Since this is the only family film for the next couple of weeks, and that we’re getting close to Halloween, the film should have staying power in box office.
I guess I thought EVEREST was going be a bigger hit than it ended up being, but in its wide release, it was only able to muster up $13.2mil. This is an okay number, but I know Universal was expecting more after it was gangbusters when it was showing in just IMAX theaters. It’s 2 week total is now $23.1mil and it was made for $55mil, so it does have a mountain to climb to break even.
THE GREEN INFERNO wasn’t able to make a name for itself in this busy weekend, as it got swallowed up and only made $3.5mil. Maybe the studio should have considered releasing the film the On Demand/Streaming/In Theaters route, as it might have reached a wider audience that way.
