It was another successful weekend at the box office, even though both Maze Runner and Black Mass under performed against expectations.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails opened to a healthy $30mil, which is $2.5mil less than the original did this time last year. I am not completely shocked by this, as the original wasn’t hugely popular, so it doesn’t have the rabid fan base as other films based off YA Novels. I now doubt its chance on making more than $100mil as it deals with heavy competition next week as Everest opens wide and Hotel Transylvania 2.
Speaking of Everest, it opened to $7.2mil showing on only 545 IMAX screens with a per theater average of $13.251. This is a big number and it bodes well for when it opens wide next weekend.
Black Mass opened to a solid $22mil. This is less than most people expected, but it is still a great number for character study film. I expect it to have good legs, as films like this don’t tend to open huge as people take their time to head to the theaters to see it. It is getting good reviews, and Johnny Depp is being praised for his performance. I’m guessing word of mouth with be good and it should end up being a solid mid-level hit.
Maze Runner; The Scorch Trials – $30mil
Black Mass – $22mil
The Visit – $11.5mil
The Perfect Guy – $9.7mil
Everest – $7.2mil
