The beginning of September was looking real sad for the box office, with some record low numbers, but last weekend was much stronger than anticipated bring September back up to pace with this already record breaking year. This weekend should keep this upward momentum going as two films with huge potential will be opening.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials should come in at #1 this weekend with around $35mil. This is the sequel to the surprise $100mil hit to last years The Maze Runner. This sequel is opening almost exactly a year after the first one, which makes me to believe that it might be a little rushed and the quality of the film will diminish, looks like critics are agreeing with that. This should not stop people from heading to the theaters making as it will have a big opening.

Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger should help bring Depp’s waning star back to the top. I had lower expectations for the film as the buzz was pretty quiet, but the film is getting good reviews and with strong Thursday night box office numbers, I think this will be the surprise hit for the weekend making $32mil by Monday and a chance to make over $100mil by the end of its run.

As for hold overs, both The Perfect Guy and The Visit should drop rather sharply as their genres aren’t known for staying power. The Perfect man should make $10mil where The Visit will make $9.5mil.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $35mil
Black Mass – $32mil
Perfect Guy – $10mil
The Visit – $9.5mil
