Labor Day Weekend is one of the hardest weekends to open a film, as most people are focused on being outside as it is the unofficial last weekend of summer. This means, no one is really going to the movies and studios are putting releasing films they don’t have much faith in, and this weekend was no different.
War Room has been a bright spot in the box office as it barley dipped in its second weekend making a total of $12.5mil over the 4 days. This has been a finical success for the studio as it only cast $3mil to make and its two week total has come to $27mil. This film should still have plenty of legs for the upcoming weeks.
Straight Outta Compton continues is successful run at the box office as it made $11.2mil bringing its outstanding total to $150mil. Despite falling one spot, Straight Outta Compton has proven to be a force to be reckoned with as it has been the king of the box office for the past 4 weeks.
A Walk in the Woods did alright bringing in the older crowd as it made $10.5mil. The movie opened on Wednesday, so it did get a little head start in box office and it’s total so far is $12.6mil. Movies geared towards older crowds tend to have more staying power at the box office, and with a solid opening like this, it could make up to $30mil if it doesn’t drop to much next weekend.
Transporter Refueled made $9mil over the long weekend, which might seem like a failure for the franchise, but even the earlier films weren’t able to bring in big numbers in their opening weekends, so this is more on par with the Transporter franchise. This might not be enough to convince the studios to make more, which is fine by me.
War Room – $12.5mil
Straight Outta Compton – $11.2mil
